SIX Swiss Exchange (Swiss Exchange) is run by SIX, a Swiss group of companies that provide a range of services across four business segments, including securities trading, settlement of securities transactions, financial information processing and cashless payment transactions.
The history of the Swiss Exchange dates back more than 150 years to the opening of the first Swiss stock exchange in Geneva in 1850. In 1995 Switzerland's three stock exchanges, located in Geneva, Basel and Zurich, merged to form a single exchange under the name Swiss Exchange. The following year, electronic trading, clearing and settlement replaced traditional floor trading in Swiss equities, options and bonds.
Today, Zurich-based Swiss Exchange is the reference market for more than 40,000 Swiss securities, providing infrastructure and technology for the trading of equities, bonds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and exchange-traded products (ETPs). Trading on the Swiss Exchange is powered by Nasdaq OMX’s X-stream INET technology, and orders are executed through a single, central order book on a price/time priority basis. Clearing and settlement is provided by SIX x-clear and SIX SIS, respectively.
